There's no such thing as a "born leader." Though some people are raised to see themselves as leaders from day one, most of us have to come to this identity over time, and with intention. It turns out that leadership is an identity, and one we have to hone and craft over time. Our leadership identity sits alongside other self-definitions we have for ourselves like friend, sister, parent, runner and lover.

The most successful female leaders build their leadership identities by setting their intentions on mastering one set of skills at a time. They turn the act of leadership into a practice. What does this look like? It looks like setting a goal, doing their best to meet it and then reflecting on their performance before setting another goal. It's best to set stretchy goals, but not too many at a time.
