Negotiating an agreeable solution is best done through a friendly conversation. And the better results occur when you put the ideas and perspectives of the other person first. The only way to fully understand their positioning is by asking for their input and what it is important to them. As answers arrive, you are then able to have a meaningful exchange of ideas for an improved solution.

• Agree to what you can do; explain the ‘why’ of what you are unable to complete

• For any item left unsatisfied, offer an alternative suggestion

• Agree on the final plan with both a timeline and deadline for completion
