Having a routine takes out a lot of the guesswork in planning your day. But, having a routine is just the first step in being productive. The second step is to utilize what you've created. For example, if you have client meetings outside of the office, block off chunks of your work week where you commit to only having client meetings during that time. This method creates space for you to actually accomplish your important work and get things done.
